U18 Football: Building the Future of Women’s Football Since 2011
A league built on opportunity, development and a love of the game
Since its establishment in 2011, the Greater Manchester Women’s Football League (GMWFL) has continued to play an important role in the development of women’s and girls’ football across Greater Manchester.
What began as a more localised league, providing opportunities for players and clubs across the region. Today, the GMWFL offers both Open Age and Under-18 football, creating a pathway for young players to develop their game and progress into adult football.
The return of U18 football
One of the most important chapters in the GMWFL’s story has been the development of its Under-18 provision.
That initial success demonstrated the demand for a dedicated U18 league offering girls the opportunity to continue playing competitive football as they approached adult football.
The decision to provide Saturday football for U18 teams has also helped the league grow, giving clubs a structured and accessible competition specifically designed around the needs of this age group.
The GMWFL's current U18 structure includes the Championship, Conference and Alliance divisions, providing different levels of competition and development. The Championship represents the highest level of U18 football within the league, while the Conference and Alliance provide valuable environments for developing players and teams.
This structure means that clubs can find an appropriate level of competition for their players while continuing to develop as a team.
And importantly, the journey doesn't have to stop at U18.
The GMWFL has seen U18 players and teams make the transition into its Open Age divisions, helping young players take the next step in their footballing journey. The league itself describes its U18 competition as an important pathway towards Open Age football.
